If you've ever received an email from me, chatted with me on skype or followed me on twitter you will know that the end of my arms I have two handy typo generators.
Today I finally found the time to upgrade my blog to the latest version of Joomla.
(No I won't tell you what version it was running but let's just say I really should have done it a very very long time ago. Funny how our own sites are often the last to get upgraded)
During the upgrade I had to edit configuration.php and I noticed that since this blog has been online I had a typo in the description metatag.
Instead of my "infamous" byline I had written Brian Teeman - agree or disagee... I don't care" />
There are many people who say that the metatags are unimportant and that Google ignores them.
Now was the perfect time to test it. How many hits would there be on google for they misspelt tagline.
It turns out that there are quite a few but none of them were to this site. They were all to bookmarking sites that had read the metatags and used it for the description of the link.
So whilst it might be true that google ignores the metatag description when indexing your site other software doesn't so you had better make sure you get it right.
