I am joomla, hear me roar
I was getting my mp3 player ready for my summer holiday today, yes a very late summer holiday, when I heard a favourite old song by Helen Reddy from the 70's.
Somehow it just seemed to be very appropriate if you change just one word.
{...}The Internet Minyan
This Erev Rosh HaShanah I wasn't at Shul but I was at Shul. At least it felt like I was.
I'm not the greatest shul go-er but when I found out that Alyth would be doing a live stream of their service over the Internet I just knew that was for me.
The idea of joining a service over the Internet may not appeal to everyone but as someone who spends their life online it was perfect for me.

Inspired, copied or plain stolen...
... the sad but true story of a developer who stole from another developer and got caught.
If you ask two chefs to write a recipe for roast chicken you will get two different recipes but the chicken "might" taste similar.
If you ask two artists to paint your portrait you will get two different paintings but they will "look" similar.
If you ask two joomla developers to create a basic weather module you will get two different modules but they will both "show" the weather.
Or so you might think.
{...}Nothing to say
Nothing really to say about anything at the moment.
That might be a shock for some people!!
But right now I am busy reading and attempting to digest the Apple Human Interface Guides.
They have a lot of words to describe very few things. So it's taking me a while to work out what are the relevant points. I'm pretty sure they could be condensed to a few pages.
So if you have something to say it's your turn now.
{...}Drink Evian - My Next Joomla secret
I regularly suffer from migraines. I've tried many things from removing certain food groups from my diet (sugary sweets) but at the end of the day I think it's mainly down to dehydration.
Coffee doesn't hydrate you, not sure why that is as it's mainly water, but it doesn't.
So now I am drinking large quantities of bottled water as I build each new Joomla web site - too early to say if the migraines have gone but my skating has improved and so has my sense of rhythm.
Red Bull might "give you wings" but Evian "gives you wheels".
{...}It's good to fail
Now that might seem like a strange thing to say but if you don't fail at some things then it means that "you are not trying hard enough".
If we always take the "safe" option that has guaranteed success then we will never truly move on and progress.
When I started this blog, and it took a lot of convincing to do it, I took a decision that this blog would not be the usual Joomla blog.
My intention is to write articles that are of interest to a wide audience and to not only provide "tips and tricks" and republished "product news" but also to write articles that are "challenging and make you really think".
{...}Michael J Jackson danced his last mambo
OK I know what you're thinking this is a blog about joomla and web development so what is Brian doing writing about Michael Jackson for. Sure his death is sad news, especially for those of us who grew up with The Jackson 5 but why give it space on this blog.
What many of you may not know is that in December 2004 his web site "MJJSource.com - The Official Source of Michael Jackson News & Information" was launched using Mambo.
{...}The Times They Are A-changin
Come gather round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
Youll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin
Then you better start swimmin
Or youll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin.
I know the next big thing on the internet!
In the last few weeks I have received numerous approaches from people who claim to have the next big thing.
With their idea they are going to storm the web and it will soon be the hottest thing, bigger than twitter, skype, youtube etc
So what do they want from me?
{...}When is the GPL not the GPL?
I was recommended an extension for joomla this week via twitter, so naturaly I had a look. The link provided to me was to the Joomla extensions directory where I saw that the extension was both licenced under the GPL and non-commercial.
I read the description and the reviews and it sounded promising so I hopped over to the developers web site to download it for myself and have a play.
And that is when my blood started to boil (again).
