Bibleoteca Nacional de Portugal (BNP) is the Portuguese National library.

Founded in 1796 it acts to preserve and catalogue  the bibliographical cultural and heritage of the Portuguese nation.

As with all national libraries the BNP is also responsible for maintaining copyright records, issuing catalog numbers and serving as a central repositary for the nation's libraries.

In recent years the insitution has begun to digitize its entire collection of historical and contempory documents into a new National Digital Library that is shared and accessible with comparible European institutions.

Including documentation of all ages, types and subjects, the collection of the National Library of Portugal is constantly evolving and acquiring new works through both purchase and donation, always of course with a specific focus on Portuguese literature.

The BNP also organises, encourages and support activities of specific national bibliographic interest. In 2004 and 2005 over 2,500 volunteers from every part of the Nation and every part of Society worked together on the "Bible Script" to produce three handwritten manuscripts of the Holy Scripture.

About Brian Teeman

  • As a co-founder of Joomla! and OpenSourceMatters Inc I've never been known to be lacking an opinion or being too afraid to express it.

Despite what some people might think I'm a shy and modest man who doesnt like to blow his own trumpet or boast about achievements.

But it seems that no blog exists without an "About" page so rather than talk about what an amazingly great guy I am and list all the things I've achieved (and failed at) in life from my Cycling Proficiency Test in 1976 to winning an award for the "UK Individual Contribution to Open / Source" in 2005 here are some links.
