Like many countries Australia chose not to place it's administrative and political Capital in one of it's biggest cities.
Allegedly it was a compromise between choosing either of the two largest cities in Australia, Sydney and Melbourne so they went for something in the middle instead.
Canberra is Australia's largest city not on the coast but only the 8th largest in total.
However it is fairly unique, for Australia, in that it is a completely designed city and for that Australians sought the expertise of Chicago architects Walter and Marion Griffin.
Their challenge, in 1913, was to create a city worthy of being a National Capital and of preserving and symbolising the geographical environment. Heavily influenced by the Garden City Movement the city didn't truly establish itself until after World War II.
The National Capiltal Authority is responsible for maintaining and developing the National Capital Plan.
There wasn't a game today so I've selected a web site from Australia, who haven't featured yet.
