Joomla GPS
Joomla extensions - 4000 and counting
The greatest strength of Joomla is the wide range of extra components, modules, plugins and tools that are available.
But sadly for so many web masters this is also Joomla's greatest weakness. Just because they are there doesn't mean you have to use them.
Please think twice before installing any extension and ask yourself this question.
"Is this extension of benefit to my site, does it offer something extra that my users would benefit from. Or am I just installing it because I can."
I mean, come on people, who needs a clock on a website there is already a clock on the screen without you adding one.

Where is joomla based? Where is the top secret bunker that holds all the joomla secrets? Is it on Tracy Island
, Isla Nubar
, Gilligan's Island
or perhaps the mystery island of Lost
.
Spot the difference - the forgotten interface
Spot the difference
was one of my favourite games when I was a child.
(No Wii or Playstations when I was a child, and only 3 television stations - how did we ever survive such a primitive lifestyle).
I always struggled to find all the differences, my sister was so much better at this game than me.
But I bet everyone can spot the differences in the next picture - a screenshot of the Joomla administrator interface.
Joomla 1.5.8 released
A new version of the Joomla 1.5 series was released today, which is possibly the last release before 1.6.
Its code name is "wohnaiki" and the only reference
I can find to that is in
"The Holy Dividing Line: Inscription and Resistance in Yaqui Culture"
and the establishment of the Wohnaiki Pueplom, the Eight Pueblos which are the backbone of Yaqui social, cultural, and political life....

Today I found a new book for Joomla! that aims to be a
"beginner's visual step-by-step guide to setting up useful websites using Joomla! in a few hours!"
Released under a Creative Commons Atrribution 2.5 India License
.
The Missing Override
I love the ability in Joomla 1.5 to override the developers idea of how to present the data without touching their code. This means I can modify the output to my hearts content safe in the knowledge that if a new version is released my changes won't be lost.
Well that's almost true.
Add a commentAre you a Dork?
Dork : An inept or foolish person
What does this have to do with Joomla? Well a dork is also the name given to the method hackers use to identify if a site is running a vulnerable extension.
As soon as a vulnerability in an extension is revealed in either the hacker forums or on responsible security sites such as milw0rm
or The Open Source Vulnerability Database
the hackers of the world use google to search the net for sites using that extension.
Backups
What do you use for backups of your Joomla web site? Until Joomla 1.6 (thanks Sam for adding this) there has been no backup routine built in to Joomla and yet backing up your website is the most important thing you should do.
No matter what your web host offers as a backup service this is your responsibility and only yours. Backups are too important to rely on anyone but yourself.
Add a commentACL - I want it now!
Since the beginning of Mambo "I want/need/demand ACL" (access control lists) must be one of the most common threads in the forums. But what do I/you mean by ACL and why is it just so dam hard to implement. (I assume it must be hard or it would have been done by now in the core)
Joomla and GPL
There has been a lot of discussion and debate regarding the GPL and Joomla's use of it, or should I say "amended" implementation of it.
After a lot of thought I tried to condense my views into one relatively short article, which I am reproducing here for posterity. It was obviously written some time ago.
