Google - you're not broke so why are you fixing it?

google broken

Spotted something new on your google search today? I really hope that this doesn't stay, the potential for abuse is huge.

[note: it appears that you have to be logged in to a gmail account to see these new "features" and that not all accounts have been enabled yet]

Thanks to Steve Burge of alledia.com for alerting me to this. I'm sure as an SEO expert he will be blogging about this in more detail shortly. Update 14:24 - Read Steve's comments here]

new google search

Google claim that this is only a personal tool and that

"The changes you make only affect your own searches."

But in the next sentence they state

"You can see how the community has collectively edited the search results by clicking on the "See all notes for this SearchWiki" link."

So which is it google? A public tool or a private and personal tool. You used to have a slogan "do nothing evil" at first glance this tool encourages people to do evil.

I'm sure we will be hearing a lot more about this in the coming days

About Brian Teeman

  • As a co-founder of Joomla! and OpenSourceMatters Inc I've never been known to be lacking an opinion or being too afraid to express it.

Despite what some people might think I'm a shy and modest man who doesnt like to blow his own trumpet or boast about achievements.

But it seems that no blog exists without an "About" page so rather than talk about what an amazingly great guy I am and list all the things I've achieved (and failed at) in life from my Cycling Proficiency Test in 1976 to winning an award for the "UK Individual Contribution to Open / Source" in 2005 here are some links.
