How to start an Open Source project
Earlier today I read a tweet that led me to a web page that led me to another web site that finally dropped me into spending 25 minutes watching a video on Vimeo.
Now I'm not usually a great watcher of online videos, especially when I'm travelling and on a dodgy 3G internet connection but something about this presentation grabbed my attention.
If I could be bothered I would spend some time summarising the video and abstracting the key points. But as you should know by now I'm lazy and don't like to repeat things if I really don't have to.
So grab a coffee, some nice biscuits, settle down in a comfortable seat and watch the presentation.
Who do you trust with your email?
We all know that the vast majority of email is spam or UCE (unsolicited commercial email) and that there are people out there whose sole aim in life is to harvest your email address.
I'm sure that you are very careful about placing your email address online, ensuring that it is protected by javascript, or using contact forms with hidden email addresses.
But when you add your email address to a newsletter or service do you consider the security of that list?
Add a commentJoomla, Apple's Hidden Secret
For the last few months I've been working hard with a team of amazing developers, designers and user interface gurus on a top secret project, protected by stacks of Non Disclosure Agreements, contracts and other legal protections.
I'm excited that at last I can reveal that Apple's new pad/tablet/slate (sorry still can't reveal the name for another 24 hours) ships by default with an application management and help system written using the Joomla framework.
Add a commentJoomla web site hacked
Today I got one of those client emails we all dread. The client had visited his brand new site and it wouldn't load it just gave a blank screen.
Experienced web developers know that a blank screen is really an error message
so I dug a little further and checked his site with my ftp client. Not surprisingly I saw that some malicious code had been inserted into the index.php files. Fortunately there was a bug in this code and that gave the blank screen.
Why Twitter? What is it good for?
During CMSexpo
many people were boring me to tears with how great twitter
is.
At the time I'd never used it and really couldn't see it's purpose.
Then I found an excellent blog post "People in the Joomla Community using Twitter
" so I thought I would give it a try.
Do you test your backups?
Last year I blogged about my personal backup procedures.
No matter how many times I say it people still don't listen.
Backing up your data is your responsibility and yours alone.
Add a commentJoomla and Drupal compared
It seams that no Joomla related blog is complete without an obligatory comparison between Joomla and Drupal.
As I've never used Drupal, and have no intention of learning it, I'm not really in a position to do a comparison.
And even if I did I am sure it would be unfairly biased as my years of experience with Joomla is bound to influence my conclusions and decisions.
Add a commentGoogle - you're not broke so why are you fixing it?
Spotted something new on your google search today? I really hope that this doesn't stay, the potential for abuse is huge.
Gmail Ninja themes
I logged into my gmail account today to see that I can now chose templates.
Along with the usual colour variants and subtle style changes there are some funkier templates for Ninjas
, Kids, graffiti artists etc.
I wonder how long it will be before gmail template clubs open up?
