Joomla 1.5.12 released
A new version of the Joomla 1.5 series was released today, which is possibly the last release before 1.6. This release contains a number of bug fixes and three moderate-level security fixes and some library upgrades.
NOTE please check the FAQ
of known issues with 1.5.12 before upgrading
Its code name is "Wojmamni Ama Woi" which is the number 12 in the Yaqui language name from Mexico, USA.
You can download update packages at joomla.org
This release marks an important milestone for the Joomla Project due to the upgrade of the PEAR library to the new BSD licensed version, which brings the codebase into full compliance with the GPL.
Two fixes of significance are
- PHPMailer allows secure connections to SMTP Servers
- File::upload() uses chmod 644 in FTP mode
The key change that most people will notice is a significant upgrade to TinyMCE v 3.2.4.1.
As always thanks to everyone who submitted bugs (and fixes) and to the Joomla Bug Squad for testing and approving the fixes.
Changelog
------------
This is a non-exhaustive (but still near complete) changelog for
Joomla! 1.5, including beta and release candidate versions.
Our thanks to all those people who've contributed bug reports and
code fixes.

Joomla Suppporters Club

Are you a "supporter/fan" of Joomla?
Would you like a simple and easy way to show your support?
How about joining a "Joomla Supporters Club".
Last week I wrote about "How much Joomla cost?" and suggested several ways that Joomla could, in my opinion, do more than it currently does, but that they all required extra funding.
I also pointed out that as it currently stands Joomla is dependent on google for virtually all of its income and that is not an income stream that is likely to rise drastically. In fact it could of course even disappear completely and anyone in business will tell you that it is never a good idea to rely on a single source of income.
So I would like to propose a new income stream for Joomla -
The Joomla Supporters Club.
The Supporters Club conveys no rights or privileges and is merely a way for individuals, web sites and companies to support joomla and to receive acknowledgment for their support.
I propose three types of Supporters. These are not hierarchical levels they are just different types, no type is better than the other etc.
Individual Supporter/Fan
- Who is it for? Private individuals
- What do you get? Listing in the Supporters Club and the right to add the words "Joomla Supporter No. 123456" in a forum signature.
- How much does it cost? $10 per annum
Web Site Supporter/Fan
- Who is it for? An individual web site e.g. www.example.com
- What do you get? Listing in the Supporters Club and the right to add a banner with a logo and the words "Joomla Web Site Supporter No. 123456" on a single web site
- How much does it cost? $50 per annum
Group Web Site Supporter/Fan
- Who is it for? A group of up to 5 web sites operated by the same person/company e.g. http://www.example.com and http://www.example2.com
- What do you get? Listing in the Supporters Club and the right to add a banner with a logo and the words "Joomla Group Web Site Supporter No. 123456" on up to 5 designated web sites
- How much does it cost? $200 per annum
For the Supporters Club concept to work I believe that it would require several things
- A public listing of all Supporters e.g. http://supporters.joomla.org (SJO)
- The banner for each Supporter links back to the SJO site for verification. An example of this process can be seen in operation at http://100.newzealand.co.nz/

- A public and transparent reporting of the revenue received from the Supporters Club and the "planned" expenditure for this income.
By calling it a Supporters Club and not a donation I do not believe there would be any issue with US charity tax laws.
By calling it a Supporters Club and not a membership I do not believe that there would be any implied rights or privileges.
The $ amounts above are just suggestions and are priced at a level to take into account the different earning levels across the globe.
[Please note that the "Supporters Cub" does not preclude Joomla/OSM from operating a higher revenue "Sponsorship" scheme]

If I weren't talking to you right now I'd be ...
Not quite so late for a Joomla client training session!
I wish people would take more notice of ...
Naming their Photoshop PSD layers & project scope creep.
A phrase I use far too often is ...
"Hey that’s cool” and “That’s fantastic/brill” – really shouldn’t be saying things like this at 40+
The most suprising thing that has happened to me is ...
Getting through my kids teenage years – never thought I’d cope. Plus learning to fly, even though I hate heights.
I'm good at ...
Talking to clients & saving them money/time by using open source applications.
I'm very bad at ...
Saying no… I’d work for free if free paid the bills!
The ideal night out is ...
A curry, a cold beer & the company of my wife – no kids!
The best age to be is ...
40+ it gives you wisdom and lots of scenarios to look back on and learn from.
What did you dream of becoming as a child?
A pilot (still trying), a professional rugby player (gave up with bad knees) and have my own business (got there eventually!)
My philosophy on life is ...
You will never achieve what you never begin...
How did you get involved in Joomla?
Started using the big CMS’s & ECM’s like Mediasurface, Percussion Rhythmyx, Reddot, etc… whilst contracting at big corporates in the late 90’s. Thinking how cool it was for someone to be able to update their websites without techy knowledge, lead me on the path of going through nearly every CMS available. Over the years I’ve used Drupal, Wordpress any many others – including Joomla… but ‘totally’ fell in love with Joomla from v1.5.
I am involved in Joomla because ....
It helps pays the bills, saves my clients money, has a great & responsive community and has the most useful extension directory on the planet.
What one feature would you like to see in Joomla?
A friendlier & more useful UI frontend – one where users would never have to go into the backend, to maintain menu’s, section & categories, etc.
What is the first extension you install in Joomla?
Always JCE
editor, then sh404sef
, then Google Analytics.
Complete the sentance "Joomla rocks the world because ..."
"…I always get a great reception from clients whilst demoing, nothing is impossible & it helps pay the bills!"
Some blog post updates
Thought I would spend a little time today looking back at some of my previous blog posts and post a few updates.
In this fast moving and ever changing world it doesn't take long for "breaking news" to become "old news".
K2 - Sub-Categories for joomla are here!
K2 is now updated to version 2.0.0 and there is a new dedicated community site
. To quote lead K2 developer Fotis Evangelou "Why wait for Joomla 1.6? K2 provides ACL, nested categories etc now"
Artisteer - The Death of the Joomla Template Club
Artisteer has been considerably updated with more features and now supports more CMS platforms and is available for Mac OS X users
(beta only)
JCal Pro - The Joomla Calendar
Version 2.1 is now available with multiple calendars, public/private events and more advanced repeat event handling.
Joomla Developer Showdown
The showdown will start on July 2nd. Full details of the component specifications will be released then.
Built for Joomla
Sadly there has been no interest in this. I still hold out hope though.
