joomla calendarFor the last two years I've been working with community and faith based groups here in the UK to help them "communicate with their community".

Like most community groups they have events and activities on a regular basis so probably the first extension I've installed on their site has been JCal Pro, the most complete calendar solution for any Joomla web site.

I am bored with powerpoint!
I am bored with sales presentations!
I am bored with slide-shows!

Just because you can make a powerpoint presentation with a thousand slides doesn't mean you should. If you can't say what you need to say in a few slides don't say it.

The chances of me staying awake and catching the important points of your presentation whilst you bore me with every miniscule aspect of your company/product are almost non-existant.

If you can't convince me to have an interest in your product/company in the time it takes me to fall asleep then you have no chance.

My nephew came home from school on friday and asked what was a geek. I tried to explain to him that there were many types of geeks. Some of which I would be happy to be associated with, others I'd run a mile from.

Trying to illustrate my point to him I googled and stumbled across the amazing work of Scott Johnson, creator and artist for ExtraLife.

As a skilled artists and cartoonist he has identified 56 different types of geeks and created a poster of them all. You can even commision him to create a new geek type just for you.

What type of geek are you? Or what geek-type did Scott miss.

This week I was approached by a book publisher, to review their books on this site. After pointing them to my blog honesty post they agreed to send me two of their latest books for review.

Unfortunately it is not possible to review them because the publisher, Packt, doesn't trust me or you.

Today Brad Baker announced that if I want to search www.joomla.org or community.joomla.org then I have to do the search at forum.joomla.org.

"Searching for 'stuff' on the Joomla.org suite of sites

What is one thing that Google knows how to do? Search. Therefore, we've setup an excellent tool, using Google to help you locate resources from almost all the Joomla sites in one place. To use it, you will need to start here: http://forum.joomla.org"

Digital Books

Last week was my birthday!! And an amazingly special friend bought me a Sony PRS-505 Reader. If you don't know what that is you can read a great review of all available eReaders at The Register.

As I can now pop an unlimited supply of books in my jacket pocket I've been doing alot more reading so this new blog category will be a place to catch book reviews, recommendations and perhaps even share some things I learn along the way.

It will NOT be a place for sponsored book reviews or full of affiliate links as I practice blog honesty.

One of the changes in Joomla 1.5.8 is changes with some of the newsfeeds supplied as sample data which according to this bug report

It appears that all Joomla installations have been providing a loophole for advertising for Linuxcentral.com products in every installation"

This suprised me as very few of the Joomla sites I visit actualy use the newsfeed component to display feeds, so if the component isn't in use on a site how is this happening?

Spot the difference was one of my favourite games when I was a child.

(No Wii or Playstations when I was a child, and only 3 television stations - how did we ever survive such a primitive lifestyle).

I always struggled to find all the differences, my sister was so much better at this game than me.

But I bet everyone can spot the differences in the next picture - a screenshot of the Joomla administrator interface.

JoomlaA new version of the Joomla 1.5 series was released today, which is possibly the last release before 1.6.

Its code name is "wohnaiki" and the only reference I can find to that is in

"The Holy Dividing Line: Inscription and Resistance in Yaqui Culture"

and the establishment of the Wohnaiki Pueplom, the Eight Pueblos which are the backbone of Yaqui social, cultural, and political life....
