I bet you are amongst the majority of internet users who use one password for everything.

A password is only as strong as the weakest link and if you use the same password on multiple sites it is only as strong as the security on the weakest site.

And if you recently had an account at typo3.org you just found the weakest site as their site was compromised over the weekend.

Despite claims to the contrary Joomla 1.5 does have an ACL system. It may be rudimentary but when fully understood can be very useful.

To help you I've created a simple table with an overview of who can do what.

It should be obvious but it seems that people need a reminder.

You should only ever download files from their original source!! If you don't how will you ever be certain that what you are downloading is the real deal and doesnt have some hidden backdoor.

Not long ago a new version of wordpress was released at www.wordpresz.org which wasn't actually the real deal.

Don't fall into the same trap!.

giant swiss army knifeThe greatest strength of Joomla is the wide range of extra components, modules, plugins and tools that are available.

But sadly for so many web masters this is also Joomla's greatest weakness. Just because they are there doesn't mean you have to use them.

Please think twice before installing any extension and ask yourself this question.

"Is this extension of benefit to my site, does it offer something extra that my users would benefit from. Or am I just installing it because I can."

I mean, come on people, who needs a clock on a website there is already a clock on the screen without you adding one.

Where is joomla based? Where is the top secret bunker that holds all the joomla secrets? Is it on Tracy Island, Isla Nubar, Gilligan's Island or perhaps the mystery island of Lost.

Spotted something new on your google search today? I really hope that this doesn't stay, the potential for abuse is huge.

In recent months there has been alot of talk in the Joomla world about the use of the word "joomla" in a domain name. I'm not going to rehash the argument here regarding the trademark of the word joomla and the usage of that trademark in a domain name, I'm fairly clear on my views on this.

But today I read the report of a World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) arbitration panel regarding the use of a third parties trademark in a domain name that I thought would be of interest.

I logged into my gmail account today to see that I can now chose templates.

Along with the usual colour variants and subtle style changes there are some funkier templates for Ninjas, Kids, graffiti artists etc.

I wonder how long it will be before gmail template clubs open up?

In this small leather bag, that is approximately 25cm x 25cm or 10" x 10" in old money, I carry my portable Joomla training suite.

It's my own TARDIS

It may be small on the outside but its enormous on the inside. In the bag I carry:

  • laptop for the presentation
  • projector
  • spare laptop
  • usb stick
  • mobile broadband
  • keyboard
  • Joomla and web design reference books
  • a few bits and pieces
  • an interactive white board (see video)

How often do you check your computer for virus infection and have you ensured your anti-virus software is up to  date?

Today the "world renowned" London hospital – St Bartholomew’s (Barts) in the City, was brought to a standstill after a computer virus infected the network and technicians were forced to shutdown the network for immediate disinfection.
